Arn sat laid on his small makeshift bed stirred awake by his parents once again arguing about Hakkar. The Gurubashi tribe had fallen on hard times since the last time Hakkar was banished. Rumors had been circulating that in the depths of Zul'gurub Hakkar had been resurrected, Arn himself was skeptical but his father well.....

"I be tellin ya, I 'ear de rumors! We can't work wit Hakkar, he gonna kill us all!"

"But sweetie, da tribes speak o de growing strength o da Alliance an' Horde, de Horde jus made an outpost right in our jungle! And lets not forget da Darkspear, our people be goin trough hard times, Hakkar can aid us."

"Remembah de stories, all da sacrifices, Hakkar always hungry, he de worst o da Loa. De Soulflaya aint good"

"Jan'rokh, let us wait and see, if de Soulfaya does return perhaps it will herald the rise of a new Gurubashi Empire."

"Zara, I beg ya, we gotta leave an' soon before darka tings befall us all. Wat would ya do if dey offered Arn up at an altar ta feed de beast!"

"They wouldn't"

Arn slowly drifted away finally able to sleep, his parents had been arguing a lot lately and even odder, his mother had been disappearing for days at a time, then would come home exhausted. His father would ask her why but she would always have an excuse or deflection. Perhaps he suspected, perhaps he knew, but maybe he was just blinded by love to the truth.

Arn's dreams as of late had been darker, might even call them nightmares. Most of the time he saw the jungle, but it was burning. The various creatures all slain including the Gurubashi, and always he saw himself slain on altar, his blood pooling on the floor. Other times he saw Zul'gurub, the trolls of the city carrying on their day but deep in depths of the cities, in the great temples, the fires were always burning. He would hear odd voices, sometimes screams, othertimes joy echo from those bastions of power. But that odd voice, its tone was always deeper, more...majestic? He could never quite place it.

This dream, was different...it seemed so real. He was in a dark hallway, torches were spaced out along the walls but even still, the darkness still beckoned before him. He heard chanting in the distance. More of the dream came to focus, he was being dragged through a ziggurat. Two trolls garbed in ceremonial armor had him by each arm, chanting softly as a priest walked behind him, also chanting. The air was humid and smelled of incense and blood.

He looked down at the floor, the stones were grey, worn with age and wear. Plop plop plop, they kept on walking. The smell and chanting was euphoric, and just when he lost himself in his euphoria, they arrived in the main chamber. The burning incense gave the air a hazy quality, the torches adding their smoke to the mix. The chanting masked priests stood around an altar caked in blood and gore and turned in unison at the new arrivals.

"Dis be da latest one, he speaked out against de return o Hakkar, now he gets ta aid his return into de world."

"Good dis one be a fittin sacrifice, place him on da altar."

The sacrifice finally grasping what was taking place started screaming and thrashing. The left guard punched him hard in the side of the head dazing the troll, while the right one kicked him hard in the knee. They forced him down on the altar, he then felt constricting magics on him limbs holding him in place.

"Grab de knife, an' hurry, don't wanna keep Hakkar waiting"

He stared at the ceiling, its old stones once again witness to the foulest of ceremonies. How much evil have these stones seen, do they secetly cry out in protest at this sacrilege or do they approve. Water dripped down from the ceiling, one drop hit him on the forehead, the others his arms and legs. The troll blinked as a shadow passed over him, he saw the glint of light reflecting off the metal blade.

"Oh Soulflaya, we offa ya dis sacrifice ta aid ya return into dis world so dat way you can bring our tribe ta greatness once more!"

The knife plunged down, searing agony tore through his body as his chest was impaled, cut, slice, tear, his chest was cut open. Unbearable pain tore his body, he thrashed about his voice drowned out by the blood in his throat and mouth, a hand reached into his chest and grabbed. Agony gripped his entire body as the troll passed from this world to the next.

The masked priest held the heart high in the sky and let out a shrill cry. That odd deep voice returned laughing. All the other priests formed up around the bloodied altar while the two guards disposed of the corpse.

Back in his village, Arn tossed and turned in his sleep, screaming out loud. Jan'rokh looked over his son, his features coated in worry and anxiety, this wasn't the first time his son had had dreams like this. He went to ask Zara about these dreams but once again she was gone....

Re: Arn's Backstory

Post by Arnhammer on Mon Sep 28, 2015 7:03 am

A few days had passed and Zara still hadn't returned. His dreams weren't as vivid as that one but he was still perturbed by them. Something dark was happening to his people and he knew he was powerless to stop it. His father was equally worried and spoke out often against the rumors that he knew were true, but his zul of his village paid them no heed.

"Arn, we gotta go out ta see de Zul, he be wantin everyone dere now, get movin ya lazy good fa nuttin!"

"Ya ya, I coming I comin." Arn grumbled.

They all gathered in the center of their makeshift village, most of its buildings were decrepit wooden huts that somehow managed to survive in the oppressive jungle, his village wasn't the richest in the world, that's for sure. Arn stared at the bonfire and Zul'khan addressed his people.

"We all bein summoned ta Zul'gurub, every single Gurubashi in de whole jungle gonna be dere, I want us ta be dere first, so gatha ya selves, we be leavin soon!"

Arn turned towards his father "What ya tink gonna happen?"

Jan'rokh turned back "I aint sure, but I got a real bad feelin bout dis."

The two trolls packed their bags and began the trek to Zul'gurub, due to his village marching together it warded them from the more vicious animals in the jungle as well as the lesser jungle troll tribes who would take any opportunity to attacked an isolated Gurubashi.

"Whatevah happens in de city Arn, if tings lookin bad I want ya ta run, leave, maybe anotha tribe take ya in, who knows maybe even de Darkspear. I jus be knowin dat sometin vile gonna 'appen. I can feel it."

After a couple days trek through the jungle Arn's village as well as many others all arrived in Zul'gurub, Arn had never seen the capital, it was huge! Ziggurats, temples, training grounds, many smaller huts, and the fires, always the roaring bonfires. As Arn walked with his tribe through the city, his eyes found themselves gazing at the main central ziggurat. Arn stared at it and noticed something off about it. It seemed to almost radiate power, and the fires on the ziggurat were dancing, inviting him to join them. He looked at the waters around it, they were dark, with darker shadows swimming beneath in the water. "I nevah seen so many large fish in dere, dey must be pretty well fed." He once again stared at the temple, "maybe I should go take a closa look, wait no, I gonna get myself killed."

Arn shook his head of the influence of the ziggurart, and thought "ya I tink ma fatha be right, sometin bad gonna 'appen."

The trolls all gathered at the base of one of the many ziggurats that dotted the primordial city. Arn looked up at the top of it and saw a masked priest, he looked familiar....could he perhaps be the same one from his dream?

"Welcome ta Zul'gurub mi bruddas, ya all probably wonderin why all ya summoned 'ere ta day ya?"

A wave of chatter rolled through the crowd.

"Hard times 'ave fallen on de jungle, we be a people in decline, da Alliance an' Horde be encroachin on our ancestral lands, Meanwhile we grovelin beneath de canopy, weak an' afraid!"

The chatter in the crowd rose higher and acquired an angry pitch.

"Howeva, dere be a way, YES, a way to reclaim de powa of our people! De Loa not pleased wit de Gurubashi, when we try ta...talk wit em dey voicing dey displeasure!

The crowed gasped in disbelief

But dey shown us how ta regain de favor! We gonna 'ave....a brawl, ta show our strength an' devotion to de loa. We 'ave hand picked our best ta fight in dis. Some o ya gonna die but it be for de glory of de loa an' de Gurubashi. De winna dey said, gonna become de loa's blessed champion!

The crowd cheered wildly as several masked priests, accompanied by their bodyguards went through the crowed and selected certain trolls. Zara and a one of those guards appeared beside Arn and Jan'rokh.

"I been gone so much cus I tryin ta convince de mightiest o de priests o ya worthiness, my love! Ya can easily win dis fight an' become de mightiest o da Gurubashi!"

Jan'rokh stared hard at his wayward wife. "I....still got a bad feelin about dis. But if it pleases de loa, I guess I gonna fight. Arn, if anytin 'appens ta me, dere be a chest buried behind de tree in front o our hut, take de gold an' run."

Zara soothed him "Aint nothing gonna 'appen to ya. Your victory gonna bring strength ta our tribe an' village."

The trolls were all rounded up and given make shift weapons to fight with. Everyone was pushed towards the edges of the temple compound to give the brawlers adequate room to fight.

"REMEMBA, ya fight fa glory o de loa an' all de Gurubashi!"

With that yell all the tribesmen started brawling, The screams of the dead and dying filled the air, while the clang of the weapons resonated through the air, its crescendo increasing with each passing moment. At one point a head flew from the melee and landed in the crowd.

Arn ran through the throng, trying to find a better vantage point to view his father....

Arn, finally saw his father, he was in the heart of the brawlstanding over a pair of dead trolls and their broken weapons. He was desperately parrying the attacks from two other trolls. He backpedaled further and further until he tripped over a root. One of the trolls leaned over him to deliver the killing blow until the second troll stabbed him in the back.

Jan'rokh taking advantage of this rolled away from the falling corpse, jumped up and eviscerated the other one. The swirl of fighting moved over his father and he lost sight of him once more.

The crowd around him was cheering, some were chanting, others sat there frozen. The air was tingling with power, and the bonfires were roaring even louder. Arn smelled incense as well, the head priest ontop of the ziggurat gazed down at the melee, "what was he thinking?" Arn wondered.

The melee gradually thinned out until only his father and one other troll remained. The crowd fell silent as the two began a final duel. Clash parry, smash dodge, Jan'rokh dispatched the last troll with a decapitating strike from his axe.

For the first time since the brawl started the head priest spoke.

"JAN'ROKH BE DE WINNA!"

The guards and a few priests went down the melee, collected the dead and dying while Jan'rokh was led towards the top of the ziggurat. Arn looked back at the bodies, some of them seemed to be glowly faintly as they were carried off. Also why weren't they feastin on them?

Arn whispered "Sometin be wrong 'ere." He scanned the crowd but none of them seemed to notice barring a small handful.

Jan'rokh was led to the top of the temple where a throng of priests and their guards, as well as Zara, awaited him.

"Jan'rokh ya did de Gurubashi good ta day, now de loa gonna judge ya ta see if ya truly worthy!"

The priests formed a ring around Jan'rokh and channeled their magics into him. The top of the ziggurat was seething with power. The priests magics were a variety of colors and they all were flowing into Jan'rokh.

The head priest raised a fist and in unison the priests stopped. Zara walked up beside Jan'rokh and kissed him on the cheeks. The crowd all stared up transfixed by the ritual. Everyone stepped back from the pair as they walked to the edge of the Ziggurat.

Zara smiled at Jan'rokh "You did us all very good ta day my love."

Zara reached a hand into her pocket and before anyone could react, she stabbed Jan'rokh in the chest. His body recoiled from the impact.

Zara whispered in his ear "Ya heart gonna make a worthy sacrifice fa de Soulflaya." She carved a hole in his chest, then brought her knife slicing down to his stomach. She reached a hand into his chest and tore out his heart. His lifeless body toppled from the top of the ziggurat and crashed down to the floor below.

Zara took the bloody heart to the main priest who devoured it.

"HE HAD DOUBT IN HIS HEART, NEVA DOUBT DE STRENGTH O DE LOA OR DA GURUBASHI! WE GONNA 'AVE ANOTHA FIGHT TOMORROW I HOPE DAT CHAMPION BE WORTHY"

The crowd remained utterly silent as the priests slowly turned and went back to the shadows within the ziggurat.

"Oh mighty Soulfaya, dese brawls gonna remove all de dissenters one by one from de tribe, little do de know dere defiance just aidin ya arrival into de world."

A deep ominous laughter filled the ziggurat as the priests went back to their hellish rituals.

Elsewhere in the jungle, a young troll fled towards Grom'gol and his destiny, all he had was a sack of gold and his old family warblade....
